Whip Rule Change: Jockeys could lose their riding fees and percentage of the prize pot if they break tough new whip rules announced by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). From 10 October, the amount of times a jockey's whip can be used during a race will be nearly halved to seven times in Flat races and eight in races over jumps. A maximum of five strokes can be administered in the last furlong or from the final obstacle. If a rider is handed a suspension of three days or more by the stewards for a whip violation, a financial penalty will be automatically triggered.

Double Classic: Trainer John Gosden landed a notable Classic double when he won the English St Leger and then a share of the Irish St Leger within the space of an hour on Saturday. Queen Julie: In the Race Of Legends, at Doncaster, Julie Krone, triumphed over her UK based rivals, on the aptly named Invincible Hero, trained by Declan Caroll. Julie, is a sporting legend having become the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race when she captured the Belmont Stakes aboard Colonial Affair. Morison The Man: Norwich City striker, Steve Morison notched his first international goal on Friday evening. Wales claimed their first points in Euro 2012 qualifying with a morale-boosting victory in Cardiff over former Group G joint leaders Montenegro. Turner Prize: Top female jockey,  Hayley Turner gained another Group One success when winning the Nunthorpe Stakes on 20/1 shot Margot Did in the 3.40 at York on Friday. A decade into her career, Turner, by far the most successful female rider that Britain has seen, already has a long list of "first woman jockey to" records against her name. She was the first to be champion apprentice, and the first to ride 100 winners in a year. Plus of course the first to ride a group one winner aboard Dream Ahead in July which was arguably the most significant, and certainly the most lucrative. It is tempting to wonder, though, how many more "firsts" she needs to cross off before her gender is no longer a matter for comment.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA  Western New York Flash forward Marta helped her team to the Regular Season Championship title, scoring her tenth goal of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Atlanta Beat on Sunday, en route to earning her third consecutive PUMA Golden Boot award.  The Brazilian soccer star edged out fellow Flash forward Christine Sinclair for the award, in the tie breaker having a greater production rate based on goals per game average.  Marta, who appeared in 14 games for Western New York, turned it on down the stretch scoring five goals in the Flash's last three games of the regular season, matching her PUMA Golden Boot-winning total from her inaugural season campaign in 2009.

The Grand National course at Aintree will be changed for 2012 after a review of April's race in which two horses were fatally injured.A reduction of between four and five inches to the drop on the landing of Becher's Brook is among the changes."It is not possible to completely eliminate risk in horse racing," said Aintree managing director Julian Thick. Barnet have signed former Peterborough United defender Exodus Geohaghon on a one-month contract. The 26-year-old had been a free agent since his release from the Posh earlier this month. Racing: Trainer, Howard Johnson has been banned from racing for four years after being found in breach of the sport's welfare rules. Three years of the ban were imposed in respect of his having raced a horse eight times after it had undergone a denerving operation that left it with impaired sensation in a lower limb, while the fourth year will be his punishment for administering steroids to other horses.
Blue Square Premier: Ace striker, Andy Mangan was on the mark for his new club Fleetwood as they made it a winning start to their campaign with a 2-0 win at Grimsby, Jean-Paul Marna was Kettering Town hero once again, scoring two goals in their 3-2 home win over Newport County, Tamworth drew 1-1 at Barrow Christie scoring from the spot, Richard Paquette notched for Hayes as they beat new boys Alfreton 3-1, Ebbsfleet lost 2-1 at home to  with York City, Walker scoring a brace for the visitors, Sam Smith and Kyle Perry scored Lincoln's goals in their 2-2 draw at Southport, while Liam Hatch notched the winner for Darlington at home to Braintree Town

World Cup Final: Japan Ladies' triumphed over the USA to win the World Cup.. Abby Wambach, looked to have given the USA the win, when scoring in extra time. However, their gallant opponents equalised on 117 minutes through the tournament's top scorer Sawa.  The usually reliable USA paid the price for some poor penalties as Japan became the first ever Asian World Champions
Form Trainer: Top northern trainer, Tim Easterby was once again among the winners on Saturday, with Kelly Harrison, on board 12/1 shot, Playful Girl, in the 5.20 at Ripon, Easterby saw other charges, Sea Clearly, 16/1and Roger Sez, in the winning enclosure
Pre-season matches: Liverpool, claimed a see-saw 6-3 victory over a Malaysian All-Star XI in front of 80,000 fans, as new signing Charlie Adam made it a scoring debut. Chelsea edged out Portsmouth, 1-0, Derby County won at Burton Albion 3-1, Crew beat Wolves 2-1, while Brackley Town took the honours against neighbouring Northampton Town, the hosts winning 1-0 thanks to a Elliott Sandy strike, among the Brackley debutants was another former Oxford United player in the shape of the nomadic, Jefferson Louis,
Kidderminster Harriers have signed midfielder Kyle Storer from Nuneaton Town on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old netted 16 times for Nuneaton last season. Harriers assistant manager Gary Whild told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "Kyle has been highly sought after - that has been well documented. "Some big hitters in the Conference were after him but he stayed true to his word and we are glad to have him."

Group One Win: Jockey Hayley Turner claimed her first Group One win as she landed the July Cup at Newmarket on Dream Ahead. She is only the second female jockey to win at the highest level after Alex Greaves dead-heated for first on Ya Malak in the Nunthorpe Stakes in 1997. Turner has reached several landmarks in her career, including becoming the first female jockey to ride 100 winners in a year [2008]. She earned her first Group One success with a well-timed charge on Dream Ahead,

Long Shots Prevail: Trainer, Eve Johnson-Houghton, enjoyed a 100/1 winner at Newbury on Friday. Her charge, Zingana, edged our evens favourite, Self Centred to take the spoils in a maiden race. It proved to be a successful day for the long-shots, as jockey Fred Tylicki, won on 66/1 outsider, French Hollow whilst in the last race at Newmarket, Albaqaa, ridden by Pat Cosgrove, won at 50/1

Rushden & Diamonds have been denied entry to the Evostik Southern Premier. The Northamptonshire side were expelled from the Conference earlier in the summer for financial reasons. The Diamonds have now also failed to satisfy Southern Premier officials of their ability to compete in their competition next season. In a statement, the league said: "the club had "failed to meet the League's conditions for entry into the League by the due date of 6 July."

Chasetown have swooped to sign striker, Alex Steadman from Mickleover Sports.  Manager Charlie Blakemore has been a long term admirer of the 24-year old wide man. Steadman has led the goalscoring charts for the last two seasons at Mickleover scoring 19 goals last season. His previous clubs include Long Eaton United and Belper Town.   Blakemore commented: "I tried to sign Alex three years ago after he played against us in a friendly for Ilkeston Town. He is quick, hard working and scores goals. He scored 19 goals last season from a wide left position and this is an area I wanted to strengthen. He is a great signing for us as we now have excellent attacking options in the squad."  Steadman joins fellow new signings Darren Stride and Jake Sedgemore in what is looking like a very strong squad for the 2011-12 Evo-Stik League season. 
 
Isabel Update: More good news on Isabel Tompsett's recovery.  Boyfriend, John Llewellyn, revealed " Isabel is regaining some vision to her right eye.  She said she could see the doctor with someone else at the end of another bed. Then when i asked her to write the names of the people i told her who had visited her since she'd been in hospital she wrote their names on a pad with her good hand, and only got 2 of the spellings a bit wrong.  This was a massive step forward for her today. Her moving parts are still very weak and she is a long way from getting out of bed but the signs are looking good from her brain and regaining the vision one of her eyes. This can only be seen as fantastic news"

 

Daventry Town have announced their new manager as being the vastly experienced Mark Kinsella. Kinsella, boasts an impressive CV having begun his career at Colchester United, before spells at Charlton Athletic, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Walsall and Lewes. He played 48 times for the Republic of Ireland, scoring three goals and playing in the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Newcastle United captain Kevin Nolan has completed his move to West Ham after signing a five-year contract. The 28-year-old, who played under Hammers manager Sam Allardyce at Bolton, has joined the Championship side for an undisclosed fee. "Having the chance to link up with Sam again is a massive thing," said Nolan on the West Ham website. West Ham have shown a certain hunger and desire to make sure that I became their player. Talks had broken down between Nolan and Newcastle over the length of a new contract. He scored 12 goals in the Premier League last season and 18 during the 2009-10 campaign as Newcastle won promotion back to the top flight.

 

Positive News: Isabel Tompsett, has started to show signs of significant improvement at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge following her horrific fall at Fakenham three weeks ago. Isabel had an MRI scan on Thursday and the results received yesterday were better than had been anticipated. Her mother Bridget said Isabel has improved greatly in terms of her general alertness and certainly she is far more aware of what is happening around her." Mrs Tompsett commented: "We at last have reason to be hopeful and it seems as though the three week milestone is a bit of a turning point as it was with Peter Toole and Richard Hawkins.

Didcot Town have appointed Francis Vines as their new manager. Vines, 49, has extensive managerial experience, which includes lifting the Southern League Premier Division title with Crawley Town in 2004. He came within a point of achieving the same feat while in charge at Farnborough in 2009 and most recently, he had a spell in charge at Ryman League Premier Carshalton Athletic. He succeeds Ady Williams who quit the Southern League South & West Division outfit last month to concentrate on a new career. Vines said: “Didcot Town has great potential and I’m looking forward to achieving success during what I regard is an exciting project.”

Luton Town boss Gary Brabin has made his first signing of the summer by bringing in Rushden & Diamonds striker Aaron O'Connor on a two-year deal. The 27-year-old had reached the end of his Diamonds contract, where he scored 14 goals in 37 games this season.

Millwall have accepted an offer from Norwich City for striker Steve Morison and have allowed the Wales international to talk to the Canaries. The 27-year-old joined the Lions from Stevenage in the summer of 2009 and notched 17 goals in 43 games in his debut Championship campaign. "Boss Paul Lambert added: "We're going to need to be as strong as we can in every department. "Steve is a natural goalscorer who will significantly add to what is already a very competitive striking department. That is what we will need in the Premier League. "Should the deal go through Morison would make the leap from playing non-league football to the Premier League in two years.

Isabel Tompsett is showing signs of slight improvement after her bad fall at Fakenham on Sunday. Although she remains in an unconscious state in Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, she is no longer receiving any medical sedation. And while she is breathing through a ventilator she is now able to make some attempt at breathing herself. Lisa Hancock, chief executive of the Injured Jockeys Fund, said: "The family were able to have a lengthy conversation with one of Isabel's doctors this afternoon and were reassured to hear that she is showing some positive signs. "She is able to move all her limbs independently

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson says superstition will keep his father, Sir Alex, away from Sunday's League One play-off final.The clash against Huddersfield will be played at Old Trafford, the home of Ferguson Senior's Premier League Champions Manchester United.And the Posh boss admits he was worried his successful dad would be a jinx. "I wasn't going to tell him to stay away, but I think he is going to," he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. "He understands it, these superstitious things, you know what they're like."He doesn't mind staying away and we win.

Doctors are confident amateur rider Isabel Tompsett has sustained no serious neck or spinal injuries following her bad fall at Fakenham on Sunday.  Jockeys Fund chief executive Lisa Hancock reports no significant change in her condition and she remains stable. "Isabel appears slightly more comfortable as the doctors are confident that she has no neck or spinal injury and as such have been able to remove her neck brace," said Hancock. "She is still heavily sedated and there is likely to be no change of any significance in the next 48 to 72 hours."

 

Champion lady amateur rider Isabel Tompsett was taken to Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital following a horrible fall at Fakenham on Sunday. Tompsett was riding Leopold for trainer David Thompson in the Aylsham Show - Bank Holiday 29th August Lady Amateur Riders' Handicap Hurdle when she crashed out at the third flight. She was unconscious and though an air ambulance was called, she was taken to hospital in a normal ambulance. Isabel, makes regular and excellent contributions to Weighed In. I'm sure we echo the thoughts and sentiments of all those in the racing industry in wishing, Iz, a full and speedy recovery

 

League One POS: Huddersfield Town, progressed through to the League One play-off final, after beating a gallant Bournemouth virtue of a penalty shoot out. Steve Lovell, bagged a brace for the visitors in normal time. Town,, will now play the winners of MK Dons or Peterborough with a Championship place up for grabs
England Ladies: Birmingham City striker, Karen Carney was on the mark for England Women as they defeated Sweden 2-0 in their final World Cup warm-up game, securing the team's first win over the Scandinavians since 1984.
POF: Phil Trainer proved to be AFC Telford's hero once again, when popping up with a stoppage time winner that guaranteed The Bucks' a return to Blue Square Premiership football. Guiseley, twice led before the former Oxford United man broke their hearts with the deciding goal. Joining AFC, in the highest tier of non-league football will be Ebbsfleet, who saw off the challenge of Farnborough. Mark West bagged another brace in a 4-2 victory

Play-Offs: Hednesford Town, will play Salisbury City in the Zamaretto Premier play-off final. Town beat Leamington 3-1 at home in front of 1,500, while Salisbury edged out Cambridge City, 1-0, In the Central League, Daventry Town beat Biggleswade, 2-0, Tom Berwick among their goals, Hitchin comfortably beat Slough 4-1, while Sholing will face Frome, who beat Mangotsfield 3-1 away in the South West final
England striker Ellen White hit a hat-trick as Arsenal trounced Barnet 5-0 to reach the FA Women's Cup final for a sixth time in eight years.Defender, Kerys Harrop notched her first WSL goal 18 minutes from time to maintain Birmingham's 100% start to the campaign. The home side had most of the possession and deserved their goal, headed home by Harrop from midfielder Jo Potter's corner

Sky Show: The people of Warwickshire were put to the test, when asked who the iconic sportsmen were when shown two photos. 15 Times champion jockey, and current BBC Sports personality of the year, AP McCoy, didn't fare too well in terms of being recognised.  Whilst conversely, Wayne Rooney was identified by all of our game participants. Super League: Rachel Williams bagged a hat-trick for a rampant Birmingham City who beat Liverpool 4-0 away, to go top of the League. Dunia Susi was the other City scorer. That's five goals in two games for former Doncaster midfielder, Williams.  In the only other SL fixture, Everton were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Doncaster Belles, Dowie notched for the hosts with Hamilton grabbing the visitors goal
Champions League: Bristol Academy have for the first time reached the Women's FA Cup final and qualified for Europe after beating Liverpool 3-0 in the semi-finals of the domestic competition on Sunday. Academy will make their debut in the Champions League next season as one of England's two entrants. They will be joined in the European competition by either Arsenal or Barnet, who meet in next week's second FA Cup semi-final.

Ladies' Super League: Birmingham City got off to a flyer in the WSL, beating Bristol Academy 4-0, on Thursday evening. Karen Carney and Rachel Williams both scoring a brace. Like Wednesday's opening evening of the WSL, there were good crowds at both games. Liverpool attracted an attendance of 835, while 602 turned up for the game in Birmingham. With attendances in the past at club games averaging little more than 100, this first set of fixtures in the new league is encouraging for the future of the women's game.
Ladies Super League: The New Super league, saw Arsenal's clash with Chelsea attract 2,510 spectators - a figure practically unheard of in women's club football - including England coach Hope Powell. Rutherford's hat-trick helped Barrow to a 5-0 victory over Kettering, while Luton Town hit Southport for six, Morgan-Smith among the hosts' goals, Fleetwood won 6-0 at Eastbourne, Viera bagged a double for the visitors, Aaron O'Connor, scored a late equaliser to give Rushden a share of the spoils at home to Wrexham who scored through Andy Mangan, Hayes beat Mansfield 4-0, McDonald's goal was enough to give Forest Green the points against Altrincham, while a brace from Liam Hatch saw Darlington beat Bath City 3-1
Championship: Steve Morrison, was on the mark for Millwall as they edged out Leeds United 3-2, Scunthorpe climbed off the bottom of the table with a shock victory over league leaders Queens Park Rangers. Rob Hulse headed the west Londoners, who need just three wins to secure promotion, into a seventh-minute lead. Koren's late goal was enough to give Hull the points at Watford, while Church scored an injury time winner to give Reading the points in a 7 goal thriller with Nottingham Forest

 

Weighed In: The British Racing School, in Newmarket, was our destination earlier in the week, as we caught up with the late Jan Wilson's horse and the BRS staff. Jan, rode, Imperial Sword, to three victories during her brief but very promising career. Her parents, Margaret and Drew Wilson, kindly donated Imperial Sword, Jan's horse, to the BRS following the Malton tragedy. Swordy, is now helping youngsters with their riding development.  He's also proving really popular with staff and students at the school.
