SCHOLARS RUN
CONTINUES
Malvern Town 0,
Chasetown 3,
Chasetown
overcame an injury to Danny Smith to cruise to their second successive
victory on the road at Malvern Town on Saturday,
writes Dave Goddard.
Chasetown attacked from the off in
similar fashion to their victory at Chesham the previous Saturday, Luke
Reynolds playing Smith through but the latter’s shot was blocked from a
tight angle and the ball went out for a goal kick.
Ben Stanford then blocked another
Smith effort on nine minutes and John Branch then played the striker through
on the right but the flag was up.
Richard Batchelor snuck in from the
right after 20 minutes and Smith was blocked yet again, while Lee Parsons’
cross was just too high for anyone to head home.
Smith then departed with a suspected
calf muscle injury on 25 minutes following a collision with Malvern keeper
Craig Humphries and was replaced by Harry Harris, and the play slipped back
into the midfield.
A Jamie Hyde free kick on 35 minutes
hit the Scholars wall before Joe Williams sent a long range effort high over
the bar. Harris’s free kick then found Reynolds at the far post but the ball
was cleared off the line.
Scholars keeper Ryan Price saw his
first action when he tipped away a Dave Reynolds free kick on 40 minutes,
before a Mark Branch free kick was sent across goal by Batchelor and Richard
Teesdale was there at the far post to tap home and put the visitors ahead.
Half time: Malvern Town 0 Chasetown 1.
Chasetown doubled their lead three
minutes into the second half when a Ben Steane free kick was headed down to
Batchelor who fired right-footed past Humphries into the back of the net.
Dave Reynolds was presented with a
shooting opportunity on 55 minutes when Dane Aldington placed a cross well,
but Reynolds tripped at the last moment. Reynolds then presented Liam
Paddock with a chance from a corner, but Price saved well on his line.
Steane then played back to Mark Branch
who blasted a right-footed shot goalwards but Humphries was able to save,
while Luke Reynolds played down the left but was denied his first goal for
the Scholars when a challenge from Joe Leighton saw him send the ball over
the bar.
Humphries then saved a Harris effort
low to his left following some good midfield work by the visitors, while
Batchelor went clear on 76 minutes but his tamely struck shot went straight
to Humphries.
Harris crowned his return from
suspension a minute later when he received a low ball from the right and
coolly rounded the keeper to tap in the Scholars’ third.
In the closing stages substitute Tony
Onokah beat the Malvern defence on the left to whip a shot in but Humphries
plucked the ball out of the air, while Steane then played through to Harris
who shot high and wide.
With four minutes to go Aldington
forced Price into his best save of the afternoon, with Ross Miller heading
out the resultant corner.
Chasetown face two trips to East
Anglia next week, travelling to Sudbury on Tuesday evening (7.45pm kick-off)
before visiting Soham Town Rangers on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

MIDLANDS
SATURDAY 29TH
NOVEMBER
SCHOLARS DEFEATED BY DUCKS
AYLESBURY UNITED 3 CHASETOWN
0,
CHASETOWN
slipped to only their second away league defeat of the season on
Saturday as they went down 3-0 in a physical game at Aylesbury United,
writes Dave Goddard.
After a scrappy start which
saw Richard Teesdale shoot straight at Ducks keeper Tom Vincent and Chris
Marsh fire over the bar, the home side took the lead on 14 minutes when
Danny Mead dodged a Harry Harris tackle and cut into the area before firing
a low left-footed shot past Scholars keeper Ryan Price.
Harris was then shown the red
card for an alleged headbutt on Ducks skipper Ben Stevens and Wayne Dyer was
also booked for a challenge on Marsh.
Both the Branch brothers went
close before substitute Roni Joe made a good run down the right for the
Ducks but Mark Branch got back to clear for a corner. John Branch then
forced Vincent to dive to his right to stop his low shot.
Gary Birch then shot over the
bar and Danny Smith hit the side netting, before Aylesbury went from one end
to the other following a Mark Branch corner just before the break and Glen
Hawkins slotted the ball under Price’s body for their second.
Hawkins was close to adding a
third almost straight from the second half kick-off, while Marsh and Birch
both had shots saved and a Hawkins header went straight into Price’s arms.
Dean Perrow replaced Mark
Branch on 58 minutes to give Chasetown a three-pronged attack, while
Teesdale headed wide from a corner.
The home side should have
sealed the points on 66 minutes, but Hawkins fired inches over the bar when
he had Price beaten.
With gaps appearing in the
Scholars defence, it was little surprise when the Ducks added a third with
ten minutes to go when Hawkins passed well to Marsh who fired past Price
into the roof of the net.
Chasetown are on the road
again on Tuesday as they travel to Arlesey Town, kicking off at 7.45pm,
before the Scholars host Dunstable Town on Saturday.

EARN STOKE CITY TIE
Chasetown 2-0
Biddulph Victoria
CHASETOWN will face Stoke City in the
next round of the Staffordshire Senior Cup after a 2-0 success over Biddulph
Victoria at a bitterly cold Scholars Ground on Tuesday,
writes Dave Goddard.
In the opening minute the Scholars’
first attack was headed over the bar by James Price for a corner, while a
solo run through the centre by Matt Pearson for the visitors saw him square
the ball to Geoff McGann who fired high over the bar.
Craig Holland was halted on the point
of shooting on 11 minutes, before returnee Dean Perrow sent a speculative
long range shot into former Chasetown keeper Matt Sargeant’s hands.
The home side took the lead after 15
minutes when a Mark Branch cross from the left found Perrow who neatly
sidestepped two defenders and slotted home right-footed for his first goal
since October.
A free kick from Dan Smith for the
Vics was headed into Ryan Price’s arms by Steve Jones before new Scholar
Richard Batchelor had a shot blocked with Holland sending the follow-up high
and wide.
A further Dan Smith free kick was
headed wide of the post by Vics skipper Scott Burge on 29 minutes before
Shaun Mould beat Ross Miller down the right but blasted his shot over the
bar.
A period of end-to-end play followed
before yet another Biddulph shot went over the bar courtesy of Dan Smith,
before Sargeant tipped away a Branch corner on 44 minutes.
Half time: Chasetown 1 Biddulph 0.
A good run past two defenders by Seb
Hamilton opened the second half with Perrow then shooting across the goal
but no-one could finish.
Biddulph’s Matt Pearson then departed
injured and was replaced by Chris Boast before Sargeant beat Gary Birch to a
loose ball, with Dan Smith then blocking a Hamilton cross and Sargeant
saving a close range shot from Birch.
Birch then played through the centre
but failed to connect with Perrow, while Hamilton played through to the
striker but his shot was saved at close range by Sargeant.
Chasetown continued to pile on the
pressure, Hamilton crossing to Perrow on 64 minutes but his shot struck the
post while a Branch corner was plucked out of the air by Sargeant.
Ben Steane made his return from injury
on 75 minutes when he replaced Batchelor, while Perrow twice went close with
Birch then heading a Branch cross wide of the post.
On 78 minutes some neat play through
the centre set up substitute John Branch who fired right-footed into the
roof of the net for the Scholars’ second.
Danny Smith recovered from a foul by
Liam McMann on 86 minutes to head Mark Branch’s free kick over the bar, and
Ryan Price pulled off a fine save from a Dan Smith free kick in the
penultimate minute to protect Chasetown’s clean sheet.
The Scholars are back in league action
this Saturday as they travel to Aylesbury United (kick-off 3pm) before
visiting Arlesey Town next Tuesday (kick-off 7.45pm).

FA CARLSBERG TROPHY 3rd
Q RD
SATURDAY 22ND NOVEMBER
TROPHY EXIT FOR SCHOLARS
CHASETOWN 1 ILKESTON TOWN 2,
A
BATTLING second half display was not enough to save Chasetown from a 2-1
defeat in their FA Carlsberg Trophy tie with Ilkeston Town on Saturday, writes
Dave Goddard.
Ilkeston had the better of
the chances over the opening 20 minutes, with Steven Istead sending a shot
into keeper Ryan Price’s arms before sending a further effort across the
face of goal, while Tom Cahill beat Vaughan Thomas down the left but his
shot was collected by Price.
The visitors took the lead
on 25 minutes when a Ben Pringle cross was fired past the diving Price by
Anthony Howell, and two minutes later Pringle whipped a free kick into the
box and Cahill headed home at the near post for their second.
With their defence working
overtime the Scholars’ chances were restricted to a 35-yard shot from
Wayne Dyer, a Gary Birch header which went over the bar and Danny Smith’s
header following a Mark Branch free kick, which was gathered by Ilkeston
keeper Chris Adamson.
Half time: Chasetown 0
Ilkeston Town 2.
Chasetown started the second
half in a more determined mood, and on 52 minutes a Branch cross was
collected by Adamson as Dyer stood unmarked at the far post, before Birch
beat two defenders to power into the box, but his shot went wide of the
upright.
Dean Perrow replaced Branch
to join the attack just after the hour, and the new formation began to
reap dividends as the visitors tried to close the game down.
Craig Holland picked up the
loose ball following a corner and played back to Smith who headed into the
side netting, before the Scholars reduced the deficit on 74 minutes when a
Harry Harris free kick into the area was headed home by Birch.
In the closing minutes Birch
beat two men into the Ilkeston area, but failed to get his shot in and
visiting skipper Lee Thompson cleared.
On 90 minutes a Harris free
kick was punched clear by Adamson allowing substitute Sam Duncum to run
through on goal for the visitors, but he was tripped by Holland who was
immediately shown the red card.
The Scholars continued to
push in stoppage time, but their efforts were not quite enough to force an
equaliser.

Midland Southern League
Tues 7th Oct
DEADLY
DEANO TOO HOT FOR SUTTON
Sutton
Coldfield Town 0, Chasetown 3,
A
FIRST minute strike from goal machine Dean Perrow set Chasetown on their way
to a 3-0 Southern League Division 1 Midlands success at Sutton Coldfield
town on Tuesday, writes Dave Goddard.
The
number of kicks in the match was barely into double figures when a long
clearance from the Scholars half was headed down by a Royals defender, and
Perrow intercepted to place a right-footed shot into the corner of the net.
The
visitors had by far the best of the first half action, and on six minutes a
Mark Branch cross went acr oss
the face of the goal, with Craig Holland just failing to connect. A Harry
Harris cross two minutes later saw John Daniels just beat John Branch to the
header to clear, with Adie Smith’s free header from the resultant corner
blocked at the far post.
The
Royals began to argue amongst themselves as the half progressed, with the
lively Gary Birch and Harris both sending shots over the bar, before a fight
back from Sutton on 32 minutes saw Aaron Farrell’s shot narrowly clear the
bar. Four minutes later, Holland collected a blocked effort from Perrow
after some fine midfield play by Lee Parsons and Birch, and he sent a
screaming shot into the top corner of Darren Steadman’s net to double the
Scholars’ lead.
Birch
then set up Perrow for a long range right-footed shot which flew inches wide
of the post, before a Sutton free kick saw skipper Phil Male’s shot do
likewise. Soon after the break Chasetown lost Parsons with what appeared to
be the recurrence of a knee injury, although this later proved unfounded,
while Perrow and Adie Smith both sent efforts wide. On 68 minutes a superb
cross from Harris went directly to Perrow, and the star striker fired the
ball into the roof of the net for his second and Chasetown’s third.
An
exchange of free kicks and long balls into the area followed, and the
Scholars resisted late efforts from Craig Owen and substitute Neil Davis for
a fine win. Chasetown are back on the FA Cup trail this Saturday, as they
travel to Evesham United in the third qualifying round (kick-off 3pm).
Sutton: Steadman, Quiggin, Daniels, Male (c), Booth, Moran, Owen, C

Stalemate for The Scholars
Chasetown 0-0 Chesham
United
The highly anticipated meeting between
Chasetown and Chesham United ended in a goalless stalemate on Saturday.

The teams were placed 4th and 3rd in
the table respectively, and both sides were evenly matched in a fiery
encounter. Chesham started off well and hit the bar after just three
minutes. This sparked the home side into life and Dean Perrow was again at
the centre of every Chasetown attack. Before half time The Scholars began to
pile on the pressure, but the quality of the final pass was lacking. The second half started with Chesham
on the front foot, but goalkeeper Lee Evans was having a great game.
Frustration started to kick in for both teams with tackles flying in left,
right and centre and bookings galore. The Scholars had a scare in injury time
when Chesham had a goal disallowed, much to the relief of the home
supporters. Chasetown are now 5th in the table while Chesham remain 3rd.

LEIGHTON TOWN 1 CHASETOWN 1
A
fast-paced but messy game saw Chasetown secure a 1-1 draw in their BGB
Southern League Division 1 Midlands encounter at Leighton Town on
Saturday, with the game only settling down in the closing minutes,

Chasetown had the first chance when a backheel from Tony Onokah to Ben
Steane was passed to Dean Perrow, but his shot was palmed away for a
corner by Reds keeper Lee Clark, with the resultant corner headed over by
Vaughan Thomas. The Scholars took the lead on 12 minutes, when a Mark
Branch free kick was headed home by Danny Smith who popped up from a ruck
surrounding the home keeper.
Moments after the kick-off Branch cleared a James Lasbrey cross over the
goal line, but referee Mellor adjudged handball, and Ben Gallant’s penalty
sent Scholars keeper Ryan Price the wrong way for Leighton’s equaliser.
Steane
then departed injured and was replaced by Craig Holland, before a Harry
Harris shot was palmed away by Clark. Holland collected the ball on the
right but was fouled for a free kick, and Branch’s kick resulted in a foul
on Clark, who was then booked for dissent.
On 42
minutes Richard Teesdale was beaten on the Leighton left, with the cross
bouncing up and catching Joe Williams’ left hand, but home penalty appeals
were waved away by the referee.
At the
other end a left-footed effort from Dean Perrow was pushed over by Clark,
with Perrow heading the corner over the bar. The second half began as the
first had ended, with a succession of challenges and little flowing play.
A low Gallant shot was stopped by Price and then cleared, before a Branch
run down the left came to nought when he shot wide.
Reds
midfielder Jack Copson was stretchered off on 70 minutes, before Onokah
put the ball in the net for the Scholars but the whistle had blown for a
push on Clark.
The
home keeper punched a corner away from under the crossbar in stoppage
time, and a scrappy game ended in a stalemate.
Chasetown are back on the FA Cup trail this Saturday as they visit Gresley
Rovers (kick-off 3pm), while the next day a charity match takes place at
the Scholars Ground in aid of the Grenadier Guards Colonel’s Fund
(kick-off 2pm).

CHASETOWN claimed their biggest ever FA Cup win with a 5-0 success over
Carlton Town in Saturday’s preliminary round tie.

The
Scholars eventually got the best out of a fairly even game, with Dean Perrow
the star man with his second FA Cup hat-trick for the side.
Neither
side allowed the other to settle on the ball over the opening minutes, and
it was the visitors who struck first although their shot flew driectly into
Ryan Price’s arms.
Two
Scholars corners came to nothing, before a run down the right by Danny Smith
ended when his shot was blocked.

Perrow
opened the scoring on 17 minutes, receiving a long ball from the defence and
calmly slotting past Carlton keeper Alessandro Barcherini, and the side held
their 1-0 lead at the break, with Carlton midfielder Dean Gent booked for
pulling down Smith on the stroke of half time.
The
visitors had the better of the opening second half minutes, and forced a
corner early on, but the Scholars defence were quick to clear.
Perrow
doubled Chasetown’s lead on 58 minutes, when a Ben Steane corner was sent
goalwards by Richard Teesdale, with Perrow on hand to hook the ball home.
Perrow
could have scored another a few minutes later, firing against the keeper’s
legs after beating the offside trap, but he completed his hat-trick soon
after. Collecting the ball just outside the area, his shot was palmed to
Mark Branch, whose follow-up cross was poked clear only for Perrow to rifle
home.

Walsall
loanee Harry Harris scored his first goal for the club on 62 minutes after
beating Barcherini to a Branch cross, while in the closing minutes Gary
Birch intercepted a Carlton free kick and passed to Perrow, who controlled
pass to Craig Holland who superbly placed the ball over the advancing

ROTHWELL
TOWN 1 CHASETOWN 2,
Chasetown came from behind in the second half at Rothwell on Saturday for
their second Southern League Division 1 Midlands success of the season

The first
chance for the Scholars came after two minutes when a Mark Branch cross
found Gary Birch, who flicked a header wide of the
post.
The
Northants side took the lead on 11 minutes, midfielder Pete Sneddon
playing through to Chris Defante, who rounded debuting Scholars keeper
Ryan Price to slot home. The
hosts could have doubled their lead two minutes later, but Sneddon’s
volley cleared the bar.
The
Bones midfielder then fired in a dangerous cross, headed clear by Danny
Smith for a corner which was gathered by Price.
The new Scholars keeper made further saves from Defante and David
Glass, but Rothwell held on in front at the break.
Chasetown debuted Walsall
Under-19 loanee Harry Harris in place of broken ankle victim Richard
Batchelor, and he set up Ben Steane whose right-footed shot just went
wide.
The
second half began in similar fashion, but Chasetown’s chances seemed to
increase when Tony Onokah replaced Birch just past the hour.
The home side struck back with a goal being disallowed by referee
Marshall for offside, but on 71 minutes the equaliser arrived as an Onokah
run set up Dean Perrow, who beat the defence before sending the ball along
the six-yard line to skipper John Branch who equalised.
Three
minutes later the Scholars were awarded a penalty after Perrow was fouled
by home keeper Alex Malong, who was booked, with Perrow snatching the lead
for the Scholars from the spot.

Moments
later the visitors survived a late free kick after John Branch was
somewhat harshly adjudged to have handled on the edge of the area, but
Glass’s free kick hit the defensive wall, and the Scholars hung on for
victory.
The next
action for Chasetown comes this Bank Holiday Monday when Romulus will be
at The Scholars Ground 1.00pm kick off and then on Saturday the FA Cup
campaign gets underway once again.
The Scholars face Northern Premier League Division 1 South club

Southern League Midland
Division - Tuesday 19th Aug
ATHERSTONE TOWN 2 CHASETOWN 1
A poor display from Chasetown
who played straight into the hands of an average looking Atherstone side,
who stuck to their game plan to record their second victory since
promotion from the Midland Alliance writes Russell Brown.
A very scrappy game saw the
home side pick up five bookings and a sending off for Dominic Reece, but
despite the Scholars gaining an equally scrappy consolation it was two
amateurish errors at the back that undid the visitors.

After a mediocre start in
which neither side looked settled, Chasetown contributed to their own
downfall after failing to clear in their own area. Barlone shot was
blocked but instead of making sure of the clearance, the Scholars defence
planted the ball straight to Dunkley and the Adders leading scorer last
season could not have asked for an easier start to his Southern League
campaign with a virtual tap in on 19 minutes.
The game continued to be
fragmented and did threaten to boil over when Holland and Wells clashed on
the side, both receiving yellow cards. A poor challenge on Richard
Batchelor ended his involvement in the game with the midfielder leaving
the field with his ankle heavily strapped. It was later discovered that
the unfortunate Batchelor had suffered a break and may be out for the
remainder of the season.
With chances at a premium,
substitute Wayne Dyer had a great chance to gain something from a
disjointed Scholars first half performance but the midfielder blitzed well
over from a great central position.
Worse was to follow in the
second half when Chasetown fell behind with a second error. A corner from
the right saw Lee Evans miss the ball completely and Jake Woolaston could
not believe his luck as he buried a free chance in the 69 minute.
The home side’s time wasting
tactics back fired on scorer Dunkley as he was yellow carded for dawdling
to the line as he was being substituted, although the Atherstone bench
were fortunate to keep all their personnel intact as Mr Murphy came over
to speak with the management team no less that four times during the
game.
Atherstone were handed a
nervous last quarter when Reece foolishly dived in to earn a red card and
that was heightened in the 84th minute when Tony Onokah’s shot
struck Danny Smith. The ball lodged between the strikers foot, but as he
turned the ball spun out to creep into the corner of the net.
The visitors almost snatched a
point when Onokah fired over from close range, snatching as the ball fell
loose in the area, but right at the death, Mark Branch was crudely pulled
back in the area by Dunce who amazingly came out of the incident without a
word spoken to him by the official and to cap an erratic night for the man
in the middle the award of a free kick outside the area finally sealed a
frustrating night for the Chasetown fans.
The
Scholars have a chance to put that setback behind them on Saturday when
they travel to Rothwell Town before returning home for a Bank Holiday
fixture against top of the table Romulus on Monday. Kick off for that
fixture is 1pm.

Chasetown FC, known as The Scholars,
started their season in winning fashion thanks to the quality of substitute
Dean Perrow, and a bit of luck.

The home side were quicker out of the
blocks at the start and within a minute Danny Smith calmly dispatched the
ball into the net, but the referee ruled him offside. That would have been
the perfect start for the Scholars but they continued to press, with Richard
Batchelor and Gary Birch coming close with headers.
Barton’s first chance did not arrive
until after about 20 minutes, Nat Liburd firing a shot over after a swift
counter attack.
This proved to be the undoing of
Chasetown, who were hit with another counter attack a few minutes later, and
Alex O’Brien wasted no time in converting a rebound from Stewart Beaver’s
long-range effort. Against the run of play, Barton had taken the lead.
Chasetown seemed to have had the wind knocked out of them, and their early
momentum was lost. Any attacks were comfortably soaked up by the away
defence, who seemed happy not to press any more and sit on their lead in the
run up to half time.
The second half started with a further
scare for the home side; Barton’s Liam George hitting the bar with a fierce
header. After that there was little incident, Chasetown seemed to be losing
impetus and were running out of ideas. This all changed when a scramble in
the Barton box resulted in an own goal by Stewart Deaton, and The Scholars
found renewed energy. They piled on the pressure in the closing stages and
it paid off when substitute Dean Perrow latched onto a through ball and
calmly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper. His celebration got him booked,
but he didn’t seem to care at the time.
Chasetown finished the game in the
driving seat, with Craig Holland and Tony Onokah coming close, but Barton
will be disappointed that they let three points slip.

Charlie Blakemore, is
perhaps one of the most high profiles managers in non-league football.
His success at the staffordshire, club in the four years he's been
managing The Scholars, has been well documented. 1st round FA Cup draw
with Oldham Athletic, then last season, knocking out Port Vale, Team
Bath, Cambridge City, Nuneaton Borough, to eventually lose to
Championship Cardiff City, 3-1 in the 3rd round proper. Charlie pictured

Chasetown, concluded their
friendlies this week, with two draws. On Tuesday they held a strong
Cardiff City side, containing new signing, Jay Bothroyd, then on
Saturday, they drew at Southern Premier Banbury United. Former Lincoln
City and AFC Telford striker, Gary Birch, missed a penalty.
This season, XTV will
film home matches, including chats with fans and post match interviews
with Charlie Blakemore, players and visiting staff.
Former Scholars, Kyle
Perry and Chris Slater starred in Port Vale's victory at
Luton Town on Saturday. Perry set up the third goal in a 3-1
victory. Both players came to the attention of the Vale, when
Chasetown knocked them out of the FA Cup last season. |

BANBURY UNITED 0 CHASETOWN 0,
SATURDAY 9TH AUGUST |

Chasetown’s final pre-season friendly of 2008 saw the
side rue two missed penalties as they recorded a goalless draw at Banbury
United. An even first 15 minutes saw the two sides cancel each other out,
with neither goal being threatened, before new Scholar Wayne Dyer flicked
in a cross to Lee Brown, who cut past a defender but saw his shot
smothered by Banbury keeper Morrell. Five minutes later a Banbury free
kick was charged down by the wall and the ball was sent from end to end, a
good run by Danny Smith down the right hand side ended with his shot being
cleared for a corner.

The
resultant flag-kick saw the referee adjudge Vaughan Thomas to have been
held down and a penalty was given, Gary Birch took the spot kick only to
see keeper Morrell palm his shot away for another corner – from which
Birch headed against the crossbar before Smith’s follow-up hit the post.
Chasetown continued to block the home side’s efforts in the area, and the
Scholars had all the first half chances but were rarely on target.
Shortly before half time, Scholars keeper Ryan Price saw his only real
action of the half, turning aside a Banbury drive for a corner.
Half time: Banbury United 0 Chasetown 0.
The
second half began in similar fashion, with Smith’s replacement Tony Onokah
nodding the ball on to Birch who was challenged when about to shoot,
before the home side became more involved in the play, with two shots
blocked by visiting keeper Price. Chasetown then spurned their second
penalty chance after Onokah was brought down on the edge of the area, with
Dyer’s spot-kick parried away by Morrell for another corner. This effort
saw the lively Onokah head goalwards only for Morrell to punch the ball
clear, and after a scramble it was finally cleared.
Scholars substitute Phil Harris cleared a Banbury effort as the side
continued in a similar vein, but at the death the home side could have
stolen a victory after Chasetown conceded a needless free kick. The ball
headed goalwards and Price impressively launched it over the bar with his
right hand, but his efforts were academic as the referee had awarded a
subsequent free kick for pushing.
Chasetown’s league programme kicks off next Saturday as they entertain
Barton Rovers at the Scholars Ground (kick-off 3pm).

Chasetown
2 Cardiff City 2
What would the Scholars have given for this score line in the last game
between these two sides? Cardiff City, FA Cup finalists, were the guests
in this last home pre-season friendly for Chasetown in a replay of the
Scholars historic third round FA Cup tie last season and were made to
sweat as the part timers produced a fantastic display at Church Street
writes Russell Brown.
Dave Jones fielded six players with senior experience in the opening
line up among them two of the goal scorers from the original cup game in
Peter Whittington and Paul Parry. Joining them were former Villa keeper
Peter Enckleman in goal, Welsh u19 international Darcy Blake, captain
for the night Ricky Scimeca and appearing at Church Street for the
second time this season new signing Joy Bothroyd fresh from putting pen
to paper from Wolves.

Chasetown fielded trialist Tony Onokah, picked up from Wednesfield and
what a debut it turned out to be for the big centre forward.
The game was delayed by a Motorway snarl up and kicked off 25 minutes
late, but the visitors wasted no time in attempting to take the lead as
Bothroyd collected a pass from Aaron Morris and fired across the face of
Lee Evans goal line.
Onokah was proving to be troublesome up front for the Cardiff defenders
and he was just off target with a header from Ben Steane's accurate
cross
The visitors took an 11th minute lead with a slick piece of play. Morris
again provided the ball in from the Chasetown right and Parry repeated
his scoring feat in the first game by driving in the ball without
missing a stride.
With the expectation of more to follow, it was surprising that Cardiff's
game got a little sloppy. The defence gifted Dave Woodvine a free shot
that he drove straight at Enckleman and that was followed by a Mark
Branch free kick that was helped on by Joe Williams, the Bluebirds
failed to react quickly to prevent Andy Penny scoping the ball just
wide.
It was beginning to concern the Cardiff bench and when Danny Smith raced
clear to plant the ball just wide of the post, the warning signs were
there for the Championship side.
On 25 minutes the crowd erupted as Onokah headed in the equaliser after
Enckleman's punch gave the new boy a chance to react instantly to the
rebound and four minutes later Church Street was in uproar as Chasetown
took a deserved lead.
Onokah was again involved and when Steane released Danny Smith there was
only going to be one result as the striker raced through to slot the
ball wide of the advancing Cardiff keeper.
After the break Enckleman saved at full stretch to deny Mark Branch and
it was Chasetown who were beginning to ask the questions once again. So
it was a blow when out of the blue, Cardiff gained an equaliser in the
69th minute.
A corner was cleared to the edge of the area and Wilson Oruma rifled in
a stunner from 22 yards that picked its way through a crowded area.
Far from letting their heads go down Charlie Blakemore's men raised
their game again and had a decent shout for a penalty turned down as Lei
Brown was flatted by Enckleman as the substitute tried to break through
on goal,
Finishing the stronger, the home side just could not find that final
touch, but at the final whistle it was clear that the Scholars had
deservedly enhanced their reputation with the Cardiff fans and team as
they were warmly applauded off the pitch.
